BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) _ In a marked escalation in attacks, suspected insurgents tried to shoot down a U.S. transport plane with a surface-to-air missile Monday, killed an American soldier in a convoy and gunned down the pro-American mayor of a city in the restive "Sunni Triangle." The violence marked the eve of a banned holiday when Saddam Hussein loyalists were expected to demonstrate their power.
4 Die in U.S. Helicopter Crash in Italy
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Four crew members were killed Wednesday in a fiery crash of a U.S. Navy helicopter in Italy, a Pentagon spokesman said. Lt. Dan Hetlage said the MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopter crashed Wednesday evening about 10 miles southwest of the Navy base at Sigonella on the island of Sicily. Names of those killed are being withheld while next of kin are notified, he said.
Michigan Officials Dig for Hoffa Evidence
HAMPTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) _ Nearly 28 years after ex-Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa disappeared, law enforcement officials dug into the ground outside a home Wednesday to search for evidence, a prosecutor said. Authorities from Oakland County were acting on a search warrant obtained Tuesday, county prosecutor David Gorcyca said.
English Schoolgirl Reunited With Parents

LONDON (AP) _ The 12-year-old schoolgirl who ran away with a former U.S. Marine she met on the Internet was reunited with her parents on Wednesday, police said shortly after announcing that the Marine had been arrested in Germany. Shevaun Pennington already was on her way back to Britain when Toby Studabaker, 31, was arrested in downtown Frankfurt, police said.
Tenet to Testify on Iraq Uranium Claim

WASHINGTON (AP) _ CIA Director George Tenet was expected to testify behind closed doors Wednesday about President Bush's claim in his State of the Union address that Iraq was trying to buy uranium in Africa to restart its nuclear weapons program. Tenet, who was to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee in a closed-door session, has already taken responsibility for the line's getting into the January speech. The White House says that while it believes the statement was accurate, it should not have been included in the president's speech.
Soldier Faces Kuwait Attack Court-Martial

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) _ A soldier charged in the grenade attack that killed two officers from the 101st Airborne Division in Kuwait will face a court-martial, the military announced Wednesday. Sgt. Hasan Akbar, 32, is charged with two counts of premeditated murder and three counts of attempted murder and could face the death penalty if convicted.
Ariz. Blaze Forces 5,000 to Flee Homes

WHITERIVER, Ariz. (AP) _ Firefighters were concerned Wednesday about wind, lightning and a lack of rain as they battled a blaze that forced thousands of people to leave their homes on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. The 14,250-acre blaze had gotten to within about a third of a mile of homes around Whiteriver, headquarters of the White Mountain Apache Tribe.

The anthrax bug swiftly disarms the sentinels of the body's immune system, hampering their ability to defend against the potentially lethal bioterrorism agent, a new study shows. The results suggest medical treatment to boost the immune system at the earliest stages of infection could counteract the toxin that anthrax produces in its initial attack. Antibiotics, like Cipro, could be used in concert to kill the bacteria themselves.
Dow Down 42, Nasdaq Falls 6
NEW YORK (AP) _ Investors collected profits for a second straight day Wednesday as Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan reiterated a mixed assessment of the economy. The market was building on losses from Tuesday when Greenspan cautioned in the first of two days of congressional testimony that deflation, an economically dangerous long-term slide in prices, is still a possibility. Greenspan also said the economy is poised for strong growth in the second half of the year, which, while a good thing, raised questions about whether interest rates are headed higher.
Orlando Magic Sign Forward Juwan Howard

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) _ The Orlando Magic signed forward Juwan Howard on Wednesday, hoping they have found a second scoring option behind Tracy McGrady. Howard, a nine-year veteran, has averaged 17.9 points and 7.5 rebounds in 649 career games with Washington, Dallas and Denver. Last season, he led the Nuggets in scoring (18.4 points per game) and rebounding (7.6 rebounds per game).
