"The Enchanter." By Vladimir Nabokov. Vintage International. 109 pp. $9. "Lolita," Vladimir Nabokov's classic novel about a depraved middle-aged man, a precocious nymphet and a bizarre country called America, has a much older sibling.
Sixteen years before Nabokov published "Lolita," he sketched out an early version, a much darker tale of a man whose perverse sexual taste involves 10-year-old girls. The 77-page novella, titled "The Enchanter," was dashed off in the author's Paris flat not long after the outbreak of World War II; Nabokov and his family fled Europe soon after and the writer went on to other projects, thinking this one unpublishable.
