NSW: Meatworkers to vote on deal to avert lockout

SYDNEY, April 2 AAP - Nearly 500 meatworkers will this morning vote on a union-brokereddeal in an attempt to avert a threatened lockout at a NSW regional abattoir.

US food multinational Cargill has issued a three-month lockout notice to meatworkersat its Wagga Wagga abattoir, effective from today.

The lockout comes after five months of failed talks over a pay deal.

But the Australasian Meat Industry Employees Union (AMIEU) brokered a deal, to be votedon by workers this morning, to avert the crisis.

"We've reached a proposal that will be put to the employees on Tuesday morning," organiserSteve Gurney said last week.

"Subject to their endorsement of that proposal the company has agreed to withdraw theirlockout notice."

Mr Gurney said the proposal included a wage offer and addressed several outstandingworkplace issues.

The meeting is due to start on site at 8am (AEST) today.
