Russia prosecutors blamed for murder acquittals

Russia's ITAR-Tass news agency is quoting the country's top investigator as saying prosecutors failed to win convictions in the slaying of Anna Politkovskaya because they lacked experience in jury trials.

Investigative journalist Politkovskaya was shot dead in the elevator of her Moscow apartment building in 2006. A jury in February acquitted three men charged with her murder.

Referring to the acquittal, Investigative Committee chief Alexander Bastrykin said Wednesday that, "We lacked experience, knowledge and ability to work in a jury trial."

President Dmitry Medvedev urged prosecutors in February to prepare better for jury trials.

Politkovskaya angered officials with her reporting of human rights abuses in Chechnya.
