Kicking off Kwanzaa

Habari Gani! Kwanzaa starts tomorrow. This cultural holiday is a week-long celebration rooted in traditional African harvest festivals and is observed each night from Friday through Jan. 1.

Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, a professor of black studies in California, as a way of connecting to traditional African values of family, community, culture and self-improvement for black Americans. Although Kwanzaa is primarily an African-American holiday, its values are universal, and today, Kwanzaa is celebrated by millions of people of many ethnic backgrounds and religions.
